Long before Instagram, the primary social media instrument of the day was your car’s rear window and back bumper. This was where you “voiced” your interests, in the form of bumper stickers or window decals. During the later part of the 1940s all the way into the '60s, when Americans took to the new interstates to visit places of interests such as national parks, scenic towns, and national monuments, vacation decals were all the rage. Plastered on the rear window of the family car – especially on station wagons – they were a proud announcement to your neighbors that you had the good fortune to vacation in a place where few Americans at the time had visited.
Souvenir travel decals are a part of America's automotive vacation and touring history. They were made and sold by the untold millions during the Golden Age of highway travel--1945-1970. Today, they have virtually disappeared. These are vintage water-dip travel decals from locations around the country. All old, all original, rare in original deadstock condition.
IF YOU ARE ARE OBSESSED AS WE ARE… SOME MORE BACKSTORY OF THE OG WHO STARTED IT ALL:
“Jolly Lindgren, the artist of the partnership, drew three or four designs advertising Yellowstone national park. Yellowstone took all the brothers could produce that year and sold 60,000 to vacationers. The next year, in 1947, the company sold 300,000 decals of Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Grand Coulee and other locales. At the beginning of the 1948 tourist season, the company had 300 different designs for its decals ‘and retailers from Florida to Alaska were selling the Spokane-made stickers.'
Millions of Lindgren-Turner decals have been printed but because nearly all ended up on the windows of cars, trucks, and camping trailers, they’ve been sent to the crusher along with the vehicle being scrapped. Although several designs have been reproduced, many originals are highly sought after today by decal collectors throughout the world.” - The Spokesman Review
